Filthy Motorsports offers a large selection of gears, lockers, bearings, seals, axles shafts, and hubs for 1999 to 2002 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks and 2000 to 2005 Ford Excursions with the Dana 50 front axle and Ford 10.5" rear axle.

These trucks are infamous for their Dana 50 front axles that look identical to the Dana 60 but have inner axle shafts that taper down significantly just as they reach the differential carrier. This weak spot begs to be upgraded and despite many Dana 50 owners hoping to swap in the internals of a Dana 60, it turns out that the housings are not compatible and the parts are not interchangeable. For this reason, Filthy Motorsports recommends considering a Dana 60 axle swap if you plan to run tires over 37" tall or expect to use the vehicle for anything more than mild off-roading.

The rear axle on these trucks is the massive Ford 10.5" that has been in use since 1985 and has proven itself to be extremely strong and very reliable. With 35 spline shafts this axle can handle tires up to 44" tall and, in fact, Chrome-Moly aftermarket axle shafts aren't even available because OEM and standard alloy shafts rarely fail.

Axle Identification

Before ordering any parts, it is critical to confirm that the axles listed here match your application. While our records and references all indicate that these are the correct axles for your vehicle, it is ultimately your responsibility to verify this information. Please use the details below to identify your axles:

Front Axle:
Dana 50
Dana 50 Parts The Dana 50 axle has 10 differential cover bolts and looks identical to the Dana 60 from to outside. The easiest way to identify the Dana 50 is by the number "229" cast into the axle webbing. The Dana 50 also uses a 1-1/8" pinion nut while the Dana 60 uses a 1-5/16" pinion nut.
Rear Axle:
Ford 10.5"
Ford 10.5 Parts The Ford 10.5" axle has 12 differential cover bolts and is more or less the same axle since it was originally introduced by Ford in 1983. The 1999 to 2006 version uses different bearings than the newer and older models, however, gears and lockers are interchangeable between them all when matched with the correct bearings.

Ring and Pinion Gears

Filthy Motorsports offers a wide range of ring and pinion gears to adjust for larger tires or tune for specific uses like highway driving, towing, rock crawling, or racing. The below table lists some basic recommendations for your vehicle as well as links to a few helpful calculators and resources. If you need additional help, please feel free to contact us directly for friendly, professional technical support (303-834-7895 or sales@filthyms.com).

*5.13 and taller ratios have smaller and weaker pinion gears that are not recommended for aggressive driving.
Axles with carrier breaks may require thick gears or offset carriers. See: Thick Gears and Carrier Breaks Explained.

Installation Kits

Installations kits are not required to install ring and pinion gears or lockers, however, they do make the process significantly easier. Filthy Motorsports recommends master install kits for high mileage vehicles, especially if you plan on keeping them for the foreseeable future. On newer, low mileage axles, the minor install kit will be all that you need since the bearings and other main components can be reused so long as they are not damaged during disassembly.

Axle Shafts

After upgrading your differential and installing new ring and pinion gears, it's time to consider upgrading your axle shafts. Stock shafts are strong enough to handle mild to moderate off-roading, however, if you plan to run significantly larger tires and/or have a heavy right foot, then Chrome-Moly axles are definitely worth considering.

U-Joints

Universal joints (or U-joints) are one of the first parts to wear out on steering axle applications and can cause vibrations and potential damage to other components. It is highly recommended to replace u-joints during any major front axle overhaul. Filthy Motorsports recommends Dana Spicer U-Joints for all applications, however, Chrome-Moly Yukon Superjoints are also available for off-road and competition use.

Hubs

A common weak point on front axles are the hubs. OEM hubs, especially automatic models, are built just strong enough for typical use and have significant reliability issues over time. Luckily, Warn and Yukon offer heavy duty manual lockout hubs that are a direct replacement on most axles. Drive flanges are also available for those that need maximum strength and have no need to ever run unlocked.

Axle Bearings and Seals

Yukon Bearings and Seals
Filthy Motorsports wheel bearing and axle seal packages include top quality inner and our axle seals and wheel hub bearings. We select US made Timken bearings and Yukon Gear Mighty Seals for every application for which they are available and similar top quality brands for applications for which they are not. Every package is assembled specific to each individual application and not all kits contain all of the above listed items.

Pinion Yokes

Yukon Pinion Yokes
While pinion yokes are not a part that needs to be replaced or upgraded very often, it is good to know and keep in mind that Yukon makes aftermarket yokes in standard alloy, Chome-Moly, and billet models available for all U-joint sizes to work with just about any possible application.
