Spicer ring and pinion gears are made in the USA using a closely guarded, proprietary grade of steel that has better grain flow and is stronger and more durable than 4130 chrome moly steel used by most aftermarket manufacturers. They are also heat treated in a far more precise, computer controlled process that optimizes the surface and core hardness while relieving internal stresses formed during the forging process.

After forging and heat treating, Spicer ring and pinion gears are precision hobbed and shaved using a 3-axis, 2-cut continuous process that creates a uniform surface for continuous indexing of the gear teeth. This process is only now starting to be offered by a small number of aftermarket gear manufacturers, however, the majority still use the cheaper, 2-axis, 5-cut process that is faster, easier, and cheaper to perform, but not nearly as precise.

After face hobbing, all Dana Spicer gears are shot peened to work harden the gear roots which doubles the fatigue life of the gear and greatly improves durability. This is another critical process overlooked by almost all aftermarket gear manufactures. Next, the ring and pinion gears are lapped together in a fine abrasive slurry to remove any imperfections in the gear to achieve an extremely smooth surface and a perfect contact pattern for reduced friction, heat, and gear noise.

Finally, every single gear is single flank tested for proper indexing before being treated with a lubricating phosphate coating that eliminates the need for a break-in period after the gears have been installed. The combination of these steps, in a highly controlled manner, is why Spicer gears are, and always will be, the strongest, quietest, most durable, easiest to setup, and most efficient ring and pinion gears you can buy.

Spicer Gear Process
Spicer gears are heat treated, face hobbed, shot peened, and then lapped for maximum efficiency, strength and durability.
