Crown Race Gears are engineered, processed, and treated to be the strongest, toughest, most efficient, and longest-lasting racing ring and pinion gears in the industry. They are forged from a proprietary steel alloy, precision machined, heat treated, lapped, two-stage shot peened, cryogenically treated, deburred by hand, and REM ISF finished before going through a thorough quality control inspection and certification. An optional Magnaflux inspection is also available for critical applications. All gears are backed by a lifetime warranty with an available 5 year renewable racing warranty that covers race use.

Metallurgy
Crown Race Gears uses a very specific steel alloy that contains elements used to improve core toughness for increased shock load absorption while supporting increased case hardeness after heat treating for a longer working life and maximum efficiency. Additional elements are added to improve corrosion resistance, deoxidation, machining, grain structure, and wear resistance.

Gear Geometry
Crown Race Gears are CNC cut using a 5-cut process that is designed to let the gear teeth slide along their faces for improved lubrication under high loads and temperatures. This gear geometry prevents the gear teeth from contacting each other in consistent spots, making them far less susceptible to pitting, excessive wear, and micro fractures.

Two-Stage Shot Peening
Crown Race Gears are shot peened in two separate stages. The first stage is done before lapping and focuses on balancing internal stresses and surface tensions, trapping microscopic surface imperfections, and improving the case hardness of the gear. The second stage is performed after cryogenic tempering and directed at the gear tooth roots where micro fractures are most likely to form and where the highest forces and stresses are seen.

Cryogenic Treatment
Crown Race Gears are cryogenically tempered by cooling the gears to -315˚F in a computer controlled process for an extended period of time before slowly returning them to room temperature. This process improves the gears toughness and hardness by converting any remaining austenite to martensite (the basis of heat treating), improving the surface to core harness transition, and significantly balancing the gear core microstructure.

REM ISF Finishing
Crown Race Gears are Isotropic Superfinished by REM Surface Engineering to produce an exceptionally smooth surface on the gear teeth for significantly improved efficiency and lubrication that dramatically reduce operating temperatures and increase gear life. After treatment, the gears are left with a polished, chrome-like finish that is both corrosion resistant and requires no break in process after the initial installation.

Magnaflux
Crown Race Gears offers an optional magnetic particle inspection (MPI), also known as Magnaflux, for critical applications. This process uses a magnetic flux (similar to dye) that is applied to the gears in a magnetic field where they concentrate around imperfections and micro fractures that can then be easily identified under UV lighting. This process is also available independently for continuing maintenance on all Crown Race Gears.
