The Dana 61 axle was a variation of the popular Dana 60 axle designed to accept gear ratios that provided better gas mileage (as a result of the 1973 oil crisis). Dana 61 axles have larger pinion offsets to allow for 3.07:1 and 3.00:1 gear ratios, however, this change means that they are not compatible with standard Dana 60 ring and pinion gears and gear ratios 4.56 and higher are unavailable. While the D61 and D60 axles look almost identical from the outside, the D61 can be identified by a "61" cast into the diff carrier housing.
